Alina Habba’s decision to adopt an assertive stance in the E. Jean Carroll defamation trial, defending Donald Trump, ultimately proved counterproductive, leading to a staggering $83.3 million judgment against her client, as reported by Raw Story on January 27, 2024.
According to former Republican National Committee chair Michael Steele, Habba’s abrasive behavior and inclination to appease Trump overshadowed her goal of persuading the jury. Steele, in a recent MSNBC panel, highlighted Habba’s confrontational exchange with reporters outside the courthouse. In the clip, she proudly asserted that defending Trump was her proudest accomplishment, hailing him as the greatest president who “made America great again.”
Steele criticized the disconnect between Habba’s motivations and the defamation case’s realities, describing her actions as performative and aimed at pleasing Trump rather than addressing the case’s facts. The trial focused on Trump’s false denial of Carroll’s rape allegation, not on determining guilt or innocence regarding the accusation.
By centering her defense on absolving Trump of being deemed a “sexual predator,” Habba, according to Steele, diverged from her mission, ultimately costing Trump an exorbitant sum of money.
The $83.3 million judgment in the defamation case is notably substantial, featuring $50 million in punitive damages and $24 million in compensatory damages awarded by the jury. This amount serves not only to compensate Carroll but also to discourage Trump and others from disseminating similar damaging falsehoods.
Despite facing significant financial and legal ramifications from recent judgments, Trump remains defiant, continuing to deny Carroll’s rape allegation and attacking her credibility. Habba plans to appeal the outcome, asserting Trump deserved to win and accusing the court of bias.
The appeals process in the defamation case looms, with Carroll’s lawyer indicating an immediate initiation of collection efforts, potentially leading to further legal battles as Trump’s team resists judgment enforcement. Simultaneously, Trump confronts additional lawsuits and investigations on various fronts, contributing to mounting damages. Some experts speculate that bankruptcy may become an option for the former president, but Trump’s historical pattern suggests a relentless legal battle to evade financial and legal accountability.
