Joaquin Phoenix recently shared a behind-the-scenes anecdote about his experience singing with Lady Gaga for their upcoming film, Joker: Folie à Deux. The musical sequel to the 2019 hit Joker has brought the two stars together, but their initial moments in the recording studio were less than perfect.
In an interview with Empire, Phoenix recounted how Gaga’s first reaction to his singing was far from flattering. “I do seem to remember her spitting up coffee the first time I sang, so that felt good, that was exciting and made me feel confident,” Phoenix joked. Despite this humorous start, he assured fans that Gaga’s support did not waver.
Phoenix went on to praise Gaga for her encouragement, despite the initial hiccup. “Gaga was always very encouraging of just, ‘go with what you feel, it’s fine,’” Phoenix said. He admitted that singing as an actor rather than a professional musician can be challenging, but Gaga’s support helped him navigate those uncharted waters.
Phoenix is no stranger to musical performances; he demonstrated his singing ability in the 2005 Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line, where he performed all his own songs. In Joker: Folie à Deux, music will play a significant role, with Phoenix reprising his Oscar-winning role as Arthur Fleck/Joker and Gaga joining the cast as Lee/Harley Quinn.
Lady Gaga, known for her powerful vocals and stage presence, also discussed her preparation for the film. In a separate interview with Empire, Gaga revealed the unique challenges she faced. “People know me by my stage name, Lady Gaga, right? That’s me as that performer, but that is not what this movie is,” she explained. Gaga emphasized that her role required a different approach to singing, one that was integral to her character Lee, rather than her own performance persona.
“It was unlike anything I’ve ever done before,” Gaga said. “I’m a trained singer, right? So even my breathing was different when I sang as Lee.” This approach highlights the depth and complexity both stars are bringing to their roles in this highly anticipated sequel.
As Joker: Folie à Deux prepares for release, fans can look forward to seeing how Phoenix and Gaga’s musical journey unfolds, despite the rocky start.
