Newly released memoir and recent interview with The Sunday Times, Cher, often hailed as the “Goddess of Pop,” delves into her remarkable career, dispelling rumors about being “difficult” and shedding light on tumultuous moments with directors. The iconic singer and actress didn’t shy away from addressing conflicts on the sets of two major films, “Mask” (1985) and “Mermaids” (1990).
“It Was Him or Me” – Cher’s Ultimatum
Cher candidly revealed an incident with director Frank Oz, initially attached to Mermaids. She recalls giving an ultimatum that led to his replacement: “I said, either you’re going or I’m going. It’s a shame because he’s a really good director, but he had a thing about me.”
The 1990 classic, ultimately directed by Richard Benjamin, saw Cher starring alongside Winona Ryder, Bob Hoskins, and Christina Ricci. Despite the behind-the-scenes drama, the film became a cherished favorite.
Clashing with Peter Bogdanovich on Mask
Another director Cher struggled with was the late Peter Bogdanovich, who led the critically acclaimed Mask. Bogdanovich famously labeled Cher as the “most difficult actor” he ever worked with. Cher didn’t hold back in her rebuttal, calling him “an a–hole” and accusing him of arrogance and poor treatment of women on set.
“He comes in and says, â€Cher, where do you think we should film this scene?’ I suggested the kitchen, and the next day, he screamed at me, claiming I was trying to direct the film,” Cher recalled.
Cher’s Take on Being “Difficult”
While Bogdanovich and others criticized her, Cher argued that her assertiveness has been misconstrued as being challenging. “I’m really easy to work with,” she said, emphasizing her respect for legendary directors like Robert Altman and Mike Nichols. “I know when to listen and when to speak up.”
Cher also shared advice she learned from Meryl Streep: “If the director wants you to do something you don’t like, say yes, then do it your way—they won’t even notice.”
Cher’s Legacy Beyond Drama
Born Cherilyn Sarkisian, Cher legally dropped her surname in 1979, a move critics like Bogdanovich have speculated symbolized her independence. Despite industry clashes, Cher remains a revered figure in both music and film, proving that creative integrity often comes with a price.
From firing directors to standing her ground, Cher continues to inspire with her fearless approach to artistry and life.
