In a solemn address delivered from the historic Valley Forge, President Joe Biden marked the third anniversary of the chaotic Capitol insurrection, emphasizing the peril he believes lies in the potential reinstatement of Donald Trump as Commander-in-Chief in 2024.
Recalling the 2021 events that saw the U.S. Capitol besieged by fervent Trump supporters, Biden reflected on the gravity of the moment, stating, “We nearly lost America, lost it all.”
From the site where General George Washington endured a harsh winter centuries ago, Biden issued a resolute message, stressing that the safeguarding of democracy is pivotal in persuading voters to reject Trump in the upcoming presidential race.
Biden meticulously detailed Trump’s role in the Capitol attack, highlighting Trump’s characterization of insurrectionists as ‘patriots’ and his promise to pardon them upon returning to office. The President accused Trump of shamelessly “glorifying” political violence, resulting in catastrophic repercussions, including a death toll that includes police officers and others.
Charging Trump with attempting to “rewrite the facts of Jan. 6,” Biden drew parallels with Trump’s efforts to manipulate the 2020 election outcome. Trump, facing 91 criminal charges related to his attempts to overturn the election, counterattacked, alleging systematic subversion of democracy by Biden and prominent Democrats.
Biden emphasized Trump’s unhealthy obsession with the past and relentless fixation on personal grievances, stating unequivocally, “There’s no confusion about who Trump is or what he intends to do.”
Before the pivotal address, Biden, accompanied by First Lady Jill Biden, participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at Valley Forge National Arch, paying homage to troops who endured the harsh winter of 1777-1778. Biden used this historical reference to underscore his belief that Trump is unworthy of inheriting George Washington’s legacy.
Biden reminded his audience that America’s leaders do not cling to power indefinitely, invoking George Washington’s voluntary relinquishment of leadership. He argued that Trump’s actions run contrary to the cornerstone principle of the orderly transfer of power in a democracy.
As President Biden delivered his address, Vice President Kamala Harris addressed the events of January 6 in South Carolina, condemning violence and challenging those romanticizing it as a “peaceful protest led by great patriots.”
The divide in the interpretation of January 6 reflects the polarization in American politics. While initial blame on Trump stood at 52%, it dwindled to 43% by early 2022, with an increase in those absolving him of responsibility. A recent poll highlighted this divide, with 70% of Republicans asserting excessive attention to the attack and only 18% believing the protesters were “mostly violent.”
Biden acknowledged that politics, fear, and financial considerations have coerced many Republicans into forsaking criticism of Trump post-January 6. He urged Democrats, Independents, and mainstream Republicans to make informed decisions for the nation’s future, asserting, “These MAGA voices who know the truth about Trump and Jan. 6th have abandoned the truth and abandoned democracy.”
