Former U.S. first lady, Rosalynn Carter, a prominent figure in American politics, passed away at the age of 96 in Plains earlier this week. President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will honor her memory by attending a service in Georgia on Tuesday, according to a statement released by the White House.
Carter, who had entered hospice care at her home in Plains alongside her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, will be remembered at a tribute service at Glen Memorial Church at Emory University in Atlanta. The service is scheduled for Tuesday, providing an opportunity for dignitaries and the public alike to pay their respects.
Members of the public will have the chance to view Carter’s casket and bid farewell as she lies in repose in the lobby of the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum in Atlanta on Monday.
The funeral for Rosalynn Carter is set to take place on Wednesday at the Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, followed by her interment at the family residence in the same town.
The Carters hold the distinction of being the longest-married U.S. presidential couple, having exchanged vows in 1946 when Jimmy Carter was 21, and Rosalynn was 18.
In a show of national mourning, President Biden has ordered that U.S. flags be flown at half-staff until Rosalynn Carter’s interment, recognizing her significant contributions to the nation’s history and public service.
