President Joe Biden criticized former President Donald Trump on Tuesday, deeming his recent NATO remarks as “dangerous” and questioning Trump’s failure to hold Russian President Vladimir Putin accountable for the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

In a video clip shared on the president’s X account, Biden emphasized the significance of NATO’s Article 5 agreement, stating its importance not only to the United States but to the entire world.

“The whole world knows if any adversary were to attack us, our NATO allies would have our back, and they know we would have their backs as well,” Biden asserted.

Biden labeled Trump’s recent comment encouraging Russia to “do whatever the hell they want” to NATO countries that don’t meet defense payment obligations as “a statement heard around the world that does nothing but encourage bad behavior.”

Expressing his dismay, Biden highlighted Trump’s failure to blame Putin for Navalny’s death, stating, “Instead, Trump said Navalny’s death made him realize how bad America is. He said, ‘We are a nation in decline, a failing nation.’ Why does Trump always blame America? Putin is responsible for Navalny’s death. Why can’t Trump just say that? Putin is responsible.”

To counter Putin’s actions, Biden urged swift action from the House to pass the Senate-approved $95 billion emergency aid package, providing crucial assistance to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan.

Trump’s delayed public response to Navalny’s death, posted on Truth Social, expressed the former president’s growing awareness of the situation, comparing it to his own legal troubles. During a Fox News town hall, Trump suggested Navalny shouldn’t have returned to Russia after being poisoned in 2020, stating, “He was a very brave guy because he went back. He could have stayed away, and frankly, probably would have been a lot better off.”

The Biden administration is set to unveil major sanctions on Friday, holding Russia accountable for Navalny’s death. White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan underscored the urgency for Congress to pass the aid bill, citing Navalny’s “killing” and Russia’s recent capture of a town in eastern Ukraine as stark reminders of the high stakes involved.
