Bold declaration, President Joe Biden reaffirmed his commitment to reforming the United States’ immigration system after a federal court temporarily blocked his executive order aimed at providing amnesty to undocumented immigrants. The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas recently ruled against Biden’s “Keeping Families Together” program, a significant initiative offering deportation protection, a pathway to citizenship, and other benefits to undocumented immigrants married to U.S. citizens.
The court’s ruling came as a response to a lawsuit led by America First Legal, a conservative organization founded by former Trump advisor Stephen Miller. The lawsuit, supported by 16 Republican-led states, argued that the executive order was unconstitutional. As a result, U.S. District Judge J. Campbell Barker issued a 14-day administrative stay, temporarily halting the program and putting Biden’s amnesty efforts on hold.
In response to the court’s decision, President Biden expressed his determination to continue the fight for immigration reform. “Last night, a single district court in Texas ruled that our work to keep families together has to stop,” Biden said in a statement released by the White House. He strongly criticized the ruling, stating, “That ruling is wrong. These families should not be needlessly separated.” The president emphasized his unwavering commitment to keeping families intact and addressing the nation’s “broken immigration system.”
The “Keeping Families Together” program was introduced by Biden in June during a White House event commemorating the 12-year anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. This initiative, a major step in the administration’s immigration policy, allows undocumented spouses of U.S. citizens to apply for lawful permanent residence without the need to leave the country. Biden highlighted this as a humane and practical approach to immigration, aimed at reducing the hardships faced by these families.
The White House estimates that the program could benefit around half a million undocumented immigrants. However, America First Legal disputes this figure, suggesting that over one million undocumented immigrants might be eligible under the program. Those approved would receive lawful permanent residence, work permits, and a pathway to U.S. citizenship.
Biden defended his executive order, stating, “All I did was make it possible for these long-time residents to file the paperwork here — together with their families.” He warned that without the “Keeping Families Together” process, spouses of U.S. citizens would face difficult decisions, including the possibility of leaving the U.S. or living in constant fear of deportation.
Despite the legal setback, President Biden remains resolute in his mission to secure the U.S. borders and overhaul the immigration system. “I will continue to fight to secure our border and fix our broken immigration system,” he asserted, signaling that his administration will not back down from the challenge.
As the legal battle unfolds, the future of the “Keeping Families Together” program remains uncertain. However, Biden’s pledge to continue the fight suggests that this issue will remain a focal point of his administration’s agenda, as he seeks to bring about meaningful change in the nation’s immigration policies.
