Bill Maher, in his HBO show “Real Time,” sharply criticized Attorney General Merrick Garland for what Maher sees as a lack of aggressive pursuit of legal action against former President Donald Trump during the 2024 election cycle.
Maher, known for his incisive commentary in the “New Rules” segment, accused Garland of being too lenient towards Trump’s alleged wrongdoing despite facing multiple criminal indictments.
Maher started by questioning Garland’s appointment, suggesting it was more of a consolation prize rather than a merit-based decision for the crucial role of Attorney General.
He likened Garland’s approach to that of a “purse dog” and criticized him for appearing too fair and bending over backwards in dealing with Trump.
Maher highlighted the seriousness of the charges Trump faces and argued that Garland’s actions fell short of what was necessary.
Maher also delved into the broader issue of political partisanship in the appointment of special prosecutors, criticizing the tendency to appoint individuals from the opposing party, which he believes leads to ineffective investigations.
Specifically, Maher criticized Garland’s handling of the case involving Trump’s alleged theft of documents from the National Archives, accusing him of dragging his feet and not involving the FBI promptly.
He concluded by lamenting what he saw as a failure of leadership on Garland’s part, suggesting that more decisive action was warranted to hold Trump accountable for any wrongdoing.
