LSU women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey has made it clear that there’s a crucial area for improvement as the team gears up for the 2024 season. After impressive preseason victories against Xavier and Alexandria, the squad is preparing for their season opener against the Eastern Kentucky Colonels on November 4.

Defense Needs Focus

Despite the team’s strong offensive performance, Mulkey emphasized the need for enhanced defense, particularly in their man-to-man strategy. “We got to get better on the perimeter and stop the team’s penetration,” Mulkey stated. She believes the team has the depth and athleticism necessary to improve in this area, stating, “We work on it every day.”

Kailyn Gilbert, a new guard from Arizona, shone brightly in the 117-37 victory over Alexandria, scoring 26 points along with seven rebounds and five assists. However, Mulkey reminded her that offensive success depends on strong defensive play. “You’re not going to get to play on that offensive end if you don’t guard on the defensive end,” she said, highlighting the importance of a balanced game.

Standout Performers

Another notable player in the game was Sa’Myah Smith, who achieved a double-double in her debut for LSU with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Yet, it was Flau’jae Johnson, a key player since 2022 and an NCAA champion in 2023, who led the scoring with 29 points, five rebounds, and three assists.

Season Goals and Upcoming Matches

As a four-time NCAA Division I tournament champion, Mulkey aims to expand her impressive resume. Last season, LSU reached the Elite Eight but fell short against the Iowa Hawkeyes in April. Looking ahead, the team has a packed schedule, with upcoming games against NW State on November 8, Charleston Southern on November 12, and Murray State on November 15.

Recruitment Efforts

To bolster their success, Mulkey and her staff are exploring recruiting opportunities. According to Sports Illustrated, two top prospects—Bella Hines and Divine Bourrage—have already verbally committed to LSU. Additionally, they are interested in Zakiyah Johnson, the No. 4 prospect in the country, who is set to make her college decision soon. Johnson, who visited LSU in September, is also considering Louisville and Kentucky. Grace Knox, another recruit, seemed to connect well with Mulkey during a recent meeting, where they were seen enjoying a dance together.
