Austrian billionaire and renowned entrepreneur Richard Lugner has passed away at the age of 91, just two months after marrying his sixth wife, Simone Reiländer, 42. Lugner, known for his extravagant lifestyle and high-profile celebrity guests at the Vienna Opera Ball, died on August 12 at his villa in Vienna, as reported by Agence France-Presse.
Lugner’s death follows recent health struggles and surgeries. He last appeared publicly at the Vienna Opera Ball in February, where he was seen with Priscilla Presley. The Austrian Chancellor, Karl Nehammer, led the tributes on social media, honoring Lugner as a “successful entrepreneur and a dazzling personality.” Nehammer described him as “an Austrian original who never lost his way” and extended condolences to his family.
Lugner was widely recognized for his contributions to Vienna’s cultural scene and his ambitious ventures, including the establishment of Lugner City, a prominent shopping center in Vienna. The center’s Facebook page shared a heartfelt tribute, expressing deep grief over Lugner’s passing and reflecting on the memorable times shared with him.
In addition to his business achievements, Lugner made several attempts at political office, running as an independent candidate in the Austrian presidential elections in 1998 and 2016. His legacy also includes a family of four children: Jacqueline, Nadine, Alexander, and Andreas.
Lugner’s recent marriage to Simone Reiländer, celebrated at Vienna City Hall on June 1, marked his sixth marriage. He had previously been married to Christine Gmeiner, Cornelia Laufersweiler, Susanne Dietrich, Christina Lugner, and Playboy model Cathy Schmitz.
Lugner’s influence and unique personality left a lasting impression on Austrian society and beyond. His passing marks the end of an era for those who knew him and admired his larger-than-life presence.
