Binghamton man, Terell Heyward, has been charged with murder following the tragic shooting of Sarah Hauer, 54, in a downtown high-rise apartment on Saturday night. The incident unfolded at the Woodburn Court One Tower on 21 Exchange Street, leaving residents of the building and the wider community shaken.
According to authorities, Binghamton Police were alerted to gunfire at the 11-story apartment building around 11:50 p.m. Upon arrival at the seventh floor, officers discovered Hauer unresponsive in the hallway with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Preliminary investigations revealed that Hauer was a close friend of a resident in one of the apartments on the same floor.
Police stated that Heyward, 51, a former boyfriend of Hauer’s friend, confronted her in the hallway before the shooting. He fled the scene immediately but was apprehended shortly afterward by the Binghamton Police Department’s Community Response Team. Officers located Heyward as he exited his apartment at 24 Isbell Street and found him in possession of a loaded .380 caliber handgun.
Charges Filed Against Heyward
Heyward now faces multiple charges, including:
- Second-Degree Murder in connection with Sarah Hauer’s death.
- Criminal Possession of a Weapon.
- Criminal Possession of Stolen Property.
Police confirmed that the recovered firearm had been reported stolen in the town of Union, further complicating the case against Heyward.
