Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has become embroiled in controversy following criticism over an invitation to a holiday party that seemingly excluded White members of the Boston City Council. The invitation, labeled as an “Elected of Color Holiday Party,” drew attention to issues of inclusivity and raised concerns about the mayor’s dedication to promoting a diverse and united community, according to Fox News on Thursday, December 14, 2023.
The holiday party invite, initially intended for all members of the Boston City Council, came under scrutiny when it was discovered that seven officials on the list were White. Mayor Wu promptly addressed the situation, clarifying that the invitation was not intended for White council members, and their invitations were retracted within 15 minutes of the original email being sent.
In a statement to reporters, Wu explained the incident, attributing it to an unintentional error in the email field. She acknowledged the common occurrence of inadvertent email mishaps and emphasized that the exclusion was not deliberate.
“We had individual conversations with everyone, so people understand that it was truly just an honest mistake that went out in typing the email field,” Wu stated, according to WCVB Boston.
She reaffirmed her commitment to creating an inclusive city, expressing her intention for Boston to be a place that embodies its values and welcomes all communities to come together.
As the first Asian-American mayor of Boston, Wu defended the event’s concept by highlighting her participation in a longstanding group representing elected officials of color across various levels of government in Massachusetts. This group, with a history of over a decade, regularly gathers to celebrate and rotates hosting duties.
Wu’s aide, Denise DosSantos, who sent out the initial invitation, sought to address the situation and apologize in a follow-up email to city council members.
“I wanted to apologize for my previous email regarding a Holiday Party for tomorrow,” DosSantos wrote. “I did send that to everyone by accident, and I apologize if my email may have offended or came across as so. Sorry for any confusion this may have caused.”
Despite the swift response and attempts to rectify the situation, the incident has prompted discussions about the importance of inclusive practices in political and civic events. Critics argue that the mishap raises questions about the mayor’s commitment to fostering unity and inclusivity in the city, particularly concerning public events involving elected officials.
