Response to an attack on Erbil Air Base, President Biden has greenlit targeted strikes on three locations in Iraq, signaling a strong response to the incident.
As reported by The Hill on Monday, December 25, 2023, the attack occurred on Christmas morning, injuring three U.S. service members. The militia group responsible is closely tied to Iran.
National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson stated that President Biden directed strikes on facilities used by Kataib Hezbollah and associated groups, believed to have direct links with Iran.
The initial assault involved a one-way attack drone, prompting the subsequent strikes on locations associated with unmanned aerial drone activities.
President Biden, swiftly briefed on the attack, ordered the Department of Defense to prepare response options. In consultation with key security officials, he chose to target locations connected to the Iran-backed militia groups.
The President places no higher priority than the protection of American personnel serving in harm’s way. The United States will act at a time and in a manner of our choosing should these attacks continue, the statement emphasized, highlighting the commitment to safeguarding U.S. interests and personnel.
The strikes come amid rising tensions in the region, notably due to the ongoing Israeli war in Gaza. The Biden administration’s alignment with Israel has drawn both support and criticism.
Simultaneously, militia groups supported by Iran have increased military activities in response to the situation in Gaza.
Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, in a separate statement, affirmed the necessity of the strikes, emphasizing that the President and he would not hesitate to defend U.S. interests. Characterizing the strikes as necessary and proportionate, Austin stated their goal is to disrupt and degrade the capabilities of Iran-aligned militia groups responsible for the attack on U.S. service members.
While we do not seek to escalate conflict in the region, we are committed and fully prepared to take further necessary measures to protect our people and our facilities, Austin asserted, echoing President Biden’s warning that the United States stands ready to respond if these attacks persist.
The developments highlight the intricate geopolitical landscape in the Middle East and the Biden administration’s strategic approach to safeguarding American interests in the region.
