Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, has yielded to mounting pressure from House Republicans pursuing a contempt of Congress charge against him. The dramatic development unfolded after Hunter’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, expressed a newfound willingness to engage in a private deposition with the investigating Republican chairmen.
Lowell, however, laid down a condition for cooperation, challenging the legitimacy of the subpoenas sent in November. He argued that these subpoenas lacked validity as they were issued before the full House authorized the impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. This legal stance has triggered a potential negotiation between the two opposing sides, marking a shift in the months-long battle.
“If you issue a new proper subpoena, now that there is a duly authorized impeachment inquiry, Mr. Biden will comply for a hearing or deposition,” Lowell stated in a letter. “We will accept such a subpoena on Mr. Biden’s behalf.”
The backdrop to this struggle is the looming Justice Department investigation, resulting in two indictments against Hunter Biden. Despite the shift in tone from Biden’s legal team, Republicans, led by Rep. James Comer and Rep. Jim Jordan, remain optimistic but insist on compliance with the existing subpoena.
“For now, the House of Representatives will move forward with holding Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress until such time that Hunter Biden confirms a date to appear for a private deposition in accordance with his legal obligation,” the Republicans emphasized in a statement.
The House Oversight and Judiciary committees have already approved contempt of Congress charges against Hunter Biden, setting the stage for a contentious vote on the House floor expected the following week. The fate of these charges rests with the Department of Justice, specifically the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, who will decide whether to prosecute.
This development marks the latest chapter in the Republican-led impeachment inquiry initiated in September, which, up until now, has failed to unearth direct evidence linking the president to alleged wrongdoing involving his son’s business dealings.
Hunter Biden has defended his refusal to comply with the GOP-issued subpoena, citing concerns about selective leaks and manipulation by House Republicans. Insisting on public testimony, he has exacerbated tensions by making appearances at the Capitol on two occasions, declining private testimony and delivering statements to the press defending his business affairs.
The situation reached a boiling point after House Republicans warned against additional delays and stunts from Hunter, asserting that the American people will not tolerate special treatment for the Biden family. Simultaneously, Hunter Biden faces legal challenges, pleading not guilty to federal tax charges in Los Angeles, with additional charges in Delaware related to a 2018 firearm purchase further complicating the already convoluted political and legal saga.
