The United States conducted precision airstrikes on three facilities in Iraq utilized by Iranian-backed militia groups, escalating tensions in the region and drawing a swift and strong condemnation from the Iraqi government. The strikes, labeled a “clear hostile act” by Baghdad, were in response to a recent drone attack that left three U.S. personnel injured.

The precision strikes, announced by U.S. officials on Monday, December 26, 2023, targeted facilities linked to Kataib Hezbollah and its affiliated groups. The military action comes amid heightened violence in the Middle East, sparked by recent attacks from the Palestinian militant group Hamas on Israel.

The U.S. military, operating in Iraq and Syria as part of a coalition dedicated to dismantling ISIS, has faced increasing attacks on its bases by what it identifies as Tehran-backed militant groups, escalating tensions in the region.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin defended the strikes, deeming them “necessary and proportionate” against facilities used by Kataib Hezbollah. The targeted strikes, executed around 8:45 p.m. ET on Monday, were a rapid response to the attack on the Harir Air Base near Erbil Airport, which resulted in one U.S. service member critically injured and two others wounded.

White House National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson confirmed the use of a one-way attack drone in targeting the Harir Air Base. The Iraqi government expressed concern over civilian casualties, reporting that over 18 people, including civilians, were injured.

In response to the U.S. military action, Baghdad issued a statement on Tuesday, asserting that the strikes “run counter to the pursuit of enduring mutual interests in establishing security and stability.” The Iraqi government highlighted the contradiction with the stated U.S. intention to enhance relations, emphasizing that such actions undermine bilateral ties.

The U.S. has attributed support and funding not only to Hamas but also to Lebanon-based Hezbollah and Houthi rebels in Yemen. General Michael Erik Kurilla, the commander of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces, defended the strikes as efforts to hold accountable those directly responsible for attacks on coalition forces in Iraq and Syria.

The aftermath of these airstrikes raises questions about the future trajectory of U.S.-Iraq relations and the broader dynamics of the ongoing conflicts in the region.
