Dearborn, Michigan, home to the largest concentration of Arab Americans in the United States, provided the backdrop for this pivotal announcement.
Leaders at the conference underscored their dissatisfaction with Biden’s response to the conflict, emphasizing the urgent need for a ceasefire.
Jaylani Hussein, a key organizer based in Minneapolis, expressed profound disappointment and anger within the American Muslim community. He highlighted the tragic toll the conflict has taken on Palestinian families and children, criticizing the use of U.S. tax dollars in ways that contribute to the devastation.
“The anger in our community is beyond belief. What we are witnessing today is the tragedy upon tragedy,” said Hussein, reflecting the sentiments of many American Muslims who had previously supported Biden.
The Health Ministry in Gaza, controlled by Hamas, reported a death toll of 15,200 Palestinians, with approximately two-thirds being women and minors. In contrast, around 1,200 Israelis lost their lives, primarily during the October 7 attack on Israel by Hamas that triggered the war.
