Judges who played a pivotal role in barring former President Donald Trump from the Colorado Republican primary ballot are now grappling with explicit death threats. The disturbing situation unfolded following a majority decision by four out of seven justices, as reported by Raw Story on Wednesday, December 20, 2023.
The exclusion of Trump from the primary ballot, a decision made by the Colorado Supreme Court, has triggered a concerning surge in violent rhetoric on social media platforms. According to the non-partisan nonprofit organization, Advance Democracy, threats against the judges have taken various alarming forms.
NBC News, citing information compiled by Advance Democracy, reveals that these threats encompass disturbing messages advocating harm to the justices. The threats range from suggestions of using hollow point bullets, rifles, rope, and bombs, to the unsettling practice of doxxing—the act of publicly revealing private information—aimed at the judges.
Described by the non-partisan group as “significant violent rhetoric,” these threats have permeated various online platforms. On a fringe site, a post explicitly calls for violence, stating, “Kill judges. Behead judges. Roundhouse kick a judge into the concrete.” Another user on a purported pro-Trump forum, known to be frequented by attendees of the January 6th events, wrote, “This ends when we kill these f–kers.”
The intensity of the vitriol is underscored by a twisted joke circulating online, asking, “What do you call 7 justices from the Colorado Supreme Court at the bottom of the ocean?”
Daniel Jones, the president of Advance Democracy, confirmed the disturbing online chatter in a statement to NBC News. He expressed, “We are seeing violent language and threats being made against the Colorado justices and others perceived to be behind yesterday’s Colorado Supreme Court ruling.”
This situation not only places the judges at the heart of a legal controversy but also makes them targets of violent threats, emphasizing the broader implications of such rhetoric on the judicial system and public discourse. The alarming level of hostility challenges the functioning of a fair and impartial justice system and raises concerns about the safety of those involved.
In light of these developments, it becomes imperative for law enforcement agencies to swiftly monitor and address these threats. The safety of judges and all individuals associated with legal decisions must be prioritized to ensure the continued functioning of a democratic society where disagreements can be expressed without resorting to violence.
This disturbing episode prompts a broader conversation about the responsibility of public figures and media outlets in shaping public discourse. It underscores the need for an environment where disagreements can be expressed without fostering a climate of violence, contributing to a healthier democratic process.
