Harry Dunn, known for his bravery during the Capitol insurrection on January 6, 2021, faced defeat in the Democratic primary for Maryland’s 3rd Congressional District. Maryland state Sen. Sarah Elfreth emerged victorious, supported by significant funding from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), which spent over $4.2 million boosting her campaign.

Elfreth’s victory, aided by AIPAC’s super PAC, marks a notable disruption in the race despite Dunn’s fundraising advantage. Although Elfreth’s campaign denied targeting AIPAC specifically, they welcomed outside support, including strategic suggestions for super PACs on a now-deleted webpage.

With a strong stance on abortion rights and gun safety, Elfreth positioned herself as a mainstream liberal, garnering endorsements from unions. Her win solidifies her position as the frontrunner to represent the Democratic-leaning suburban Baltimore/Washington, D.C., district in Congress.

Dunn’s defeat signals a triumph for right-leaning pro-Israel groups, showcasing the significant influence of well-funded super PACs in congressional races. AIPAC’s support for Elfreth over Dunn, despite Dunn’s progressive stance on domestic policies like Medicare for All and rejecting corporate PAC donations, underscores the complex dynamics of electoral politics.

While Dunn’s policy views align closely with Elfreth’s on Israel, AIPAC perceived her as the stronger candidate to defeat less Israel-friendly contenders in the Democratic field. Despite AIPAC’s opposition, Dunn rallied progressive support, receiving endorsements from groups like J Street and the Congressional Progressive Caucus PAC.

Dunn’s criticism of AIPAC’s support for Elfreth, coupled with his condemnation of Republican donors and politicians involved in efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election, exemplifies the intersection of policy, politics, and advocacy in contemporary congressional races. Despite his defeat, Dunn’s campaign ignited discussions on democracy, accountability, and the influence of special interest groups in electoral processes.
