Cate Blanchett, renowned for her powerful portrayal of Hela in Thor: Ragnarok, recently shared her reflections on the iconic Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) role. Directed by Taika Waititi, Thor: Ragnarok not only introduced Blanchett as the MCU’s first female villain but also rejuvenated the Thor franchise with its unique blend of humor and action.
In a recent interview with GQ, Blanchett expressed her surprise at being cast in the film. As a fan of Taika Waititi’s previous works, Blanchett was thrilled when the director reached out to her with the opportunity to join the Marvel universe. She recounted:
“I’d seen Taika’s films and loved them. I’d heard that it was happening, but I didn’t think anything of it. And then I just got a call saying that Taika wanted to meet, and would I be able to? I said ‘Yeah, of course!’ I didn’t know what he [wanted]. I just thought he wanted to say hello. Then he asked if I wanted to be in it.”
Blanchett went on to describe the collaborative and experimental nature of the film’s production. Known for his distinctive comedic style, Waititi fostered a playful and dynamic atmosphere on set. Blanchett highlighted the openness and creativity that defined the project, noting:

“I knew Taika was going to put his own particular spin on it and that Chris was so up for anything. Incredibly generous and funny and ready to, kind of, move this in another direction. So it felt like there was a really playful, exciting energy… It was really great. And, I mean, I learned so much.”
The actress also shed light on Marvel Studios’ approach to film development during this period. Contrary to the meticulous planning often associated with major franchises, Blanchett revealed that Marvel’s process was more flexible and adaptive. She explained:
“You know, Marvel aren’t necessarily used to having a whole script. So there wasn’t anything, you know, often they will [story] board the essential battles, and they’ll start working backwards. Like they make their stories, construct their stories. It’s a whole big, massive jigsaw puzzle.”
Despite early struggles with Thor’s character and previous criticisms of the franchise’s earlier installments, Thor: Ragnarok marked a turning point. The film’s success solidified Thor’s place in the MCU and established it as a fan favorite. Although Thor: Love and Thunder followed, Ragnarok remains a standout for its fresh take and memorable performances.
