Tragic incident at a bustling Christmas shopping venue, Florida law enforcement authorities have identified the suspect involved in a fatal weekend shooting at Paddock Mall, and are also seeking information on a potential accomplice.
Ocala police have named the alleged perpetrator as Albert J. Shell Jr., 39, accusing him of fatally shooting David Nathaniel Barron, 40, in what they suspect to be a deliberate, targeted attack on Saturday. Surveillance footage has been released, capturing a second individual who may have interfered with crucial evidence by removing the shooter’s red hat in the aftermath of the violent episode. Law enforcement is appealing to the public for assistance in identifying this individual, as the hat is believed to contain valuable DNA evidence.

Shell, now wanted for first-degree murder, is depicted in a prior mugshot with a cross tattooed on his forehead and a teardrop under one eye. Authorities report that the assailant fired multiple shots at Barron, including in the head, during the pre-Christmas chaos around 3:40 p.m. Another victim, a woman who was struck in the leg, is expected to survive.
Despite a 12-hour lockdown of the mall and an intensive search, Shell managed to evade authorities and remains at large. The weapon used in the crime was discarded by the suspect and later recovered by the police.
Ocala police are offering a $5,000 reward for any information that leads to the arrest of Albert J. Shell. Witnesses inside the mall during the incident described scenes of panic and chaos as shoppers sought safety.
Josh Pawchi, who recorded a video while sheltering inside a Kay Jewelers with his parents, described the terrifying situation where two individuals were “shooting at each other” outside the mall’s Chick-fil-A. The mall, situated approximately an hour from Orlando, was on lockdown for an extended period.
Eye-witness Jennifer Hunt Murty, a local journalist volunteering at the mall, recounted being mere feet away from the gunman during the shooting. She highlighted the lack of protection available and the proximity of the shooting to her location.
Footage from inside a Bath and Body Works store shows patrons seeking cover and running for safety. David Nathaniel Barron, the victim, was a tattoo artist and father. Family members expressed the profound impact of his loss, with his eldest daughter’s mother referring to Shell as “the Grinch” for taking away Christmas from her child and all of Barron’s kids.
