A chilling development reported by Law and Crime on December 24, 2023, Daniel Gabriel Harmon, already incarcerated for domestic violence and kidnapping, now stands charged with murder in connection to the vanishing of his ex-girlfriend, Jamilla “Milla” Shanae Smith, 30, missing since December 2.
Harmon, 34, was apprehended by the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office on December 4, following a lead to a rented vehicle allegedly containing traces of blood. The primary suspect in Smith’s case, Harmon’s arrest is linked to a horrifying 911 call where Smith reported a break-in by her ex-boyfriend, who later pursued her.
The criminal complaint, obtained by WJBF, detailed Smith’s distressing call, revealing that Harmon purportedly ran her over and offered to take her to the hospital, a proposal she refused. The call abruptly ended, and Smith has not been seen or heard from since.
Investigators posit that Harmon murdered Smith at approximately 8:30 p.m. on December 2, forcing entry into her residence on Old Jackson Highway in Jackson, South Carolina, as evidenced by a shoe print on Smith’s door. Harmon and Smith’s history of domestic violence, coupled with Harmon’s mental health challenges and self-harm threats, further complicates the case.
Desperate to locate Smith, her family and friends have conducted searches and held vigils, emphasizing her role as a loving mother and dedicated nurse.
Aiken Sheriff’s Office Capt. Eric Abdullah confirmed an ongoing investigation, collaborating with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division to analyze evidence, prioritizing Smith’s discovery.
Currently held without bond at Aiken County Jail, Harmon is set to appear in court on February 23, facing a potential life sentence if convicted. Harmon’s extensive criminal record, encompassing domestic violence, assault, battery, and drug possession, paints a troubling backdrop to this tragic tale.
