A recent report by Newsweek on December 27, 2023, U.S. Navy veteran and Weld County councilman Trent Leisy, currently running for Congress in Colorado, is making waves by advocating for the trial of four Colorado Supreme Court judges. These judges recently ruled to exclude Donald Trump from the state’s 2024 presidential primary ballot, claiming a violation of the 14th Amendment in connection to the January 6 insurrection.
The ruling, a 4-3 decision by the Colorado Supreme Court, has stirred criticism from Trump and his supporters, branding it as politically motivated. Facing federal investigation for his alleged role in the Capitol riot, Trump vehemently denies any involvement in an insurrection.
Leisy, who is seeking the 4th Congressional District seat, strongly condemns the judges’ decision, even suggesting treason trials with potential death penalties. He argues that these judges, all appointed by Democrats, are betraying the constitution and infringing on citizens’ rights.
Amid the controversy, the FBI and Denver Police Department have increased security around the judges’ homes due to reported threats, sparked by the release of their names on Leisy’s Facebook page.
Leisy’s call for treason trials has sparked debates on the boundaries of political discourse and the repercussions of such inflammatory rhetoric. A vocal supporter of Trump, Leisy questions not only the legitimacy of the judges’ decision but also proposes legislation for a president to serve three terms, citing doubts about the 2020 election.
The situation further escalated when it was revealed that Leisy made his statements at a protest hosted by DCF Guns, owned by conservative activist Joe Oltmann. Known for making threats against Democrats, Oltmann fueled the controversy with remarks on a Conservative Daily podcast, including references to gallows and a noose.
As political tensions rise, concerns mount over the safety of public officials and the potential fallout of using inflammatory language in the political arena. The debate over the judiciary’s role in determining ballot eligibility is now intertwined with calls for extreme legal actions, presenting challenges to maintaining civil and democratic discourse.
