The Indianapolis Colts have made a significant decision regarding their quarterback situation, benching Anthony Richardson in favor of veteran Joe Flacco. This news, first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Jeremy Fowler, comes after a disappointing performance from Richardson during their recent game against the Houston Texans.

Richardson’s Recent Performance

In the Week 8 matchup, Richardson struggled immensely, completing only 10 of 32 passes for 175 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. His completion rate of just 31.25% marked the lowest of his NFL career. This alarming trend has raised concerns about his accuracy and ability to minimize turnovers since being selected fourth overall in the 2023 NFL Draft.

With a career completion rate of 50.2%, Richardson has thrown eight interceptions compared to seven touchdowns. However, it’s important to note that he has showcased his ability to make plays on the ground, amassing 378 rushing yards and five touchdowns in his first ten games.

Flacco Steps Up

Joe Flacco, the 39-year-old quarterback, is set to take over the reins after signing a one-year deal with the Colts this offseason. Having previously led the Cleveland Browns to a 4-1 record last year, Flacco brings a wealth of experience. This season, he has played in four games, starting in two, and has thrown for 716 yards with seven touchdowns and only one interception.

Flacco’s presence could provide the Colts with a much-needed stability at the quarterback position as they aim to improve their 4-4 record and contend in the competitive AFC South, where they currently sit behind the 6-2 Texans.

Team’s Direction

Colts head coach Shane Steichen commented on the decision, stating that the team was “evaluating everything” following their loss to the Texans. The change at quarterback indicates a shift in strategy as the Colts prepare for their upcoming road game against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 9.

With Richardson now sidelined, he joins fellow first-round pick Bryce Young of the Carolina Panthers as another rookie quarterback being benched this season.

As the Colts make this transition, all eyes will be on Flacco to see if he can lead the team to victory and rejuvenate their playoff aspirations in the second half of the season.
