The GOP-controlled Committee on House Administration’s Subcommittee on Oversight has established a Rumble channel for the release of the second batch of U.S. Capitol Police security videos from the events of January 6, according to a report by The Epoch Times on December 8, 2023.
After the initial release of 90 CCTV clips on November 17, the new collection has grown to 135 clips—each approximately 10 minutes long—by December 7. This video content, accessible on both the House of Representatives website and the Rumble channel, constitutes almost 40 hours out of the over 40,000 hours of footage recorded by Capitol Police on the critical day.
Chairman of the Subcommittee on Oversight, U.S. Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.), emphasized the committee’s commitment to full transparency and accountability.
The videos, originating from Camera 0908 located high on the west dome of the Capitol, cover the period from just after midnight to approximately 11:55 p.m. on January 6. The footage includes scenes of protesters flowing from the Ellipse during and after former President Donald Trump’s speech, the breach of the first police line, and the ensuing violence on several levels of the west front of the Capitol.
Capitol Police, equipped with over 1,700 security cameras inside the Capitol Building and across Capitol grounds, have historically resisted public release of CCTV footage.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) announced the intent to release up to 44,000 hours of the Jan. 6 video, underscoring the importance of transparency in restoring trust in the government.
To address privacy concerns, the Subcommittee on Oversight has committed to blurring identifiable faces in the released videos to prevent retaliation or charges against individuals by the Department of Justice (DOJ).
Despite concerns, a senior congressional aide defended the blurring as a measure to protect innocent individuals from potential harm by groups with malicious intent.
The debate over the release and presentation of the Jan. 6 security videos extends beyond political circles, sparking debates over transparency, privacy, and the pursuit of truth surrounding the events of that historic day.
