A recent survey by the nonpartisan health research group KFF suggests that President Joe Biden might have an unexpected edge in the 2024 election, thanks to doubts surrounding Donald Trump’s renewed opposition to Obamacare.

The KFF poll reveals a noteworthy trend: voters generally trust Democrats more than Republicans to handle the future of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Surprisingly, a substantial portion of Republican voters don’t view the ACA as a top-tier concern.

However, the survey, conducted before Trump’s recent comments on seeking alternatives to the ACA, paints a nuanced picture. While Biden could potentially benefit, the poll also underscores a challenge in making the public aware of the administration’s initiatives to cut prescription drug costs, despite notable accomplishments like the Inflation Reduction Act.

Despite successful actions such as mandating Medicare to negotiate drug prices and capping monthly insulin costs for Medicare enrollees at $35, the survey indicates that only around one-third of the public is aware of these measures.

Tricia Neuman of KFF emphasizes the need for increased public education, particularly among seniors who stand to gain significantly from these changes.

The survey also notes that while the monthly cap on insulin costs is already in effect, the annual limit on out-of-pocket drug expenses will start next year, potentially reducing seniors’ yearly costs from over $10,000 to $2,000.

Recognizing this awareness gap, the Biden campaign has taken steps to address it. Recent campaign ads spotlight Biden’s accomplishments in lowering prescription drug costs, targeting seniors who might not be fully informed about these efforts.

In response to Trump’s criticism of Obamacare, the Biden campaign has launched a counter ad, reigniting the debate on healthcare policies.

Interestingly, the KFF survey indicates a shift in public perception of the ACA. Once a central healthcare concern for Republican voters, it has become more crucial to Democrats. Seven in ten Democratic voters consider it a “very important” 2024 issue, compared to just 32% of GOP voters.

Moreover, Democrats hold a 20-point lead in terms of which party voters trust more to handle the ACA.

While the survey offers insights into the present landscape, the dynamic nature of political opinions means that the debate on healthcare policies, particularly the ACA, will likely evolve as the 2024 elections approach. Public awareness of recent changes may play a pivotal role in shaping voters’ preferences.
