Two truckers thought they had the perfect cover, but New Jersey State Police had other plans. A routine inspection on Interstate 78 turned into a massive drug bust when troopers discovered a staggering $36 million worth of marijuana, THC products, and psychedelic mushrooms hidden inside a tractor-trailer.
The suspects, identified as 22-year-old Fnu Attiq Ur-Rahman and 35-year-old Haffez Rehman Ur, both from Stockton, California, were pulled over on February 18 near milepost 6.3 in Greenwich Township, Warren County. What started as a standard check quickly escalated when officers from the Mobile Safe Freight Unit—tasked with investigating commercial vehicle crimes—decided to inspect the trailer’s cargo.
Upon opening the truck’s doors, troopers were immediately hit with the pungent scent of marijuana. A deeper search led to the discovery of a staggering 20,117 pounds of raw hydroponic marijuana, an assortment of cannabis-THC products, and psilocybin-infused items, authorities said.
Investigators revealed that the duo owned both the trucking company and the vehicle used for the operation. Their cargo reportedly originated from the City of Industry in Los Angeles County, California, and was en route to Sayreville, Middlesex County, New Jersey.
Both men were arrested and charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana and psilocybin mushrooms. They were transported to the Warren County Jail, where prosecutors have filed motions to keep them behind bars while awaiting trial.
Legal proceedings are underway, but details on the court’s decision regarding their detention remain unclear. While one of the suspects’ attorneys declined to comment, another has yet to respond to media inquiries.
This major bust serves as a stark reminder that law enforcement is keeping a close eye on highways, ensuring that illicit cargo never reaches its final destination.
