OLATHE, Kan. — A tragic incident unfolded in Olathe on June 3, 2023, as police officers were forced to fatally shoot a man who threatened them with a knife. The individual involved has been identified as David Russell Sweet, a resident of Olathe.
The encounter took place at approximately 5:40 p.m. when Sweet approached officers during a routine traffic stop at the intersection of Santa Fe and North Water Streets. The situation escalated when officers noticed Sweet brandishing a knife in a threatening manner.
According to the Olathe Police Department, despite repeated verbal commands to drop the weapon, Sweet failed to comply, prompting officers to take action. In response to the imminent danger they faced, they discharged their firearms, striking Sweet. Immediate medical assistance was provided by emergency crews who swiftly arrived at the downtown area, but tragically, Sweet succumbed to his injuries.
The Olathe Police Department has initiated an investigation into the officer-involved shooting. As per standard protocol, the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
