Fox News anchor Bret Baier is facing intense criticism after his highly contentious interview with Vice President Kamala Harris. The aggressive exchange left Baier conceding that Harris might have achieved exactly what she set out to do.

In a post-interview reflection, Baier admitted that Harris likely had a strategic goal during the interview. “She had a mission… maybe to have a viral moment, to push back,” he said. Baier went on to suggest that Harris intended to use the platform to criticize former President Donald Trump and secure moments that would spread across social media.

Throughout the interview, Baier aggressively challenged Harris with questions echoing Trump’s talking points, including controversial issues like gender-affirming care in prisons and immigration-related crimes. Despite these pointed questions, Harris maintained her composure. Baier frequently interrupted her responses, appearing frustrated, and framing his follow-up questions like debate rebuttals.

One of the most notable moments came when Harris called out Baier for playing a misleading, truncated clip of Trump. In the clip, Trump downplayed his “enemy from within” remark, but Harris quickly corrected the narrative. “You and I both know that he has talked about turning the American military on the American people… This is a democracy!” she declared, delivering what many are calling the viral moment of the interview.

Baier’s performance received mixed reactions, even from within Fox News. While some colleagues like Martha MacCallum and Dana Perino praised his handling of the interview, not everyone was on board. A former Fox News producer anonymously commented that Baier’s approach was no different from partisan figures like Sean Hannity, criticizing his willingness to pander to MAGA viewers.

Journalists outside the network also took aim at Baier. Peter Wehner remarked on X, “Bret Baier has rarely looked as bad… Kamala dominated.” Keith Olbermann similarly tweeted congratulations to Harris for prevailing in the “debate” against Baier, despite his frequent interruptions.

Despite the backlash, Baier found support from Donald Trump, who posted on Truth Social to applaud Baier’s performance, while also taking a swipe at Harris, calling her “totally incompetent” and demanding that her “cognitive ability be tested.”

Though some may view Baier’s interview as tough journalism, the general consensus seems to be that Kamala Harris outsmarted him, using the opportunity to get her message across while turning the tables on one of Fox News’ top anchors.
