EXPLOSIVE ANALYSIS: Here’s Why Biden’s Longtime Support for Israel may now Hurt Him Politically

In the wake of the recent conflict between Israel and Hamas, President Joe Biden’s unwavering support for Israel, which has spanned his decades-long political career, is facing increasing scrutiny and potential political repercussions.

Amidst the aftermath of the violence unleashed by Hamas on October 7, President Biden empathized with Israelis, expressing grief as if personally affected. Despite global criticism over the significant civilian casualties in Gaza during Israel’s counter-attack, Biden has remained steadfast in affirming the Jewish state’s right to retaliate.

This enduring support aligns with Biden’s history of backing Israel, extending from his time as a senator to vice president and now as president. However, periodic political differences, including a recent estrangement with former Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, have tested this longstanding alliance.

While the U.S. has been a steadfast ally during Israel’s recent challenges, Biden’s political priorities and American interests do not perfectly align with those of Israel. A diplomatic cable obtained by CNN revealed stark warnings from U.S. diplomats in the Arab world, indicating that the U.S. risked “losing Arab publics for a generation.”

On the domestic front, the Gaza conflict has illuminated ideological divides within the Democratic Party, a coalition vital for Biden’s reelection. A notable shift is observed among younger voters, who are expressing increased support for the Palestinians, influenced by distressing video footage depicting civilian casualties caused by Israel’s relentless bombing. Protests, occasionally turning into overt antisemitism, have erupted on university campuses, providing an outlet for frustration among progressive activists and serving as an organizing point for left-wing politics.

Wednesday witnessed a striking protest outside the Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington, demanding a Gaza ceasefire, an action Biden has refrained from endorsing. Clashes between demonstrators and police occurred during the protest, presenting Republicans an opportunity to portray Democrats as aligning with a lawless fringe. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other senior Democratic leaders were present inside during the unrest.

Further discord unfolded in California on Thursday during the Asia-Pacific summit hosted by Biden, where a line of cars blocked the Bay Bridge between Oakland and San Francisco in protest.

While these protests have garnered attention, they have yet to match the size and intensity of previous demonstrations such as those during the Black Lives Matter movement, Occupy Wall Street, or protests against the Iraq War. Despite serious scuffles at the DNC on Wednesday, previous weeks saw peaceful pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian demonstrations in Washington, drawing tens of thousands of protesters.
