A groundbreaking move towards openness, Speaker Mike Johnson has announced the release of over 40,000 hours of footage capturing the tumultuous events of January 6, 2021, at the U.S. Capitol. Fox News reported this significant development on Friday, November 17, 2023.
Responding to the violent protests stemming from discontent over the 2020 election results, Speaker Johnson has already made a portion of the footage available to the public, with plans to gradually unveil the rest over time.
In a statement, Johnson stressed the importance of truth and transparency, stating, When I ran for Speaker, I promised to make accessible to the American people the 44,000 hours of video from Capitol Hill security taken on January 6, 2021. Truth and transparency are critical.
To ensure swift public access, Johnson initiated the immediate posting of videos on a public website. He outlined plans to expedite the addition of the vast footage, providing the public with an uncensored account of the events of that day.
In an effort to accommodate various stakeholders, Johnson announced the creation of a public viewing room, allowing citizens, criminal defendants, public interest organizations, and the media to scrutinize every minute of the videos independently.
While the majority of the footage is set for public release, Johnson acknowledged that about 5% of the content would be withheld due to sensitive security information related to the building architecture. Additionally, certain faces in the footage will be blurred to protect individuals from potential retaliation.

The House Administration Committee’s subcommittee on Oversight is overseeing the process of making this extensive footage public, ensuring a structured and responsible approach to dissemination.
Speaker Johnson’s initiative contrasts with the approach taken by former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who, in September, released select clips from January 6 to qualified individuals under tight security measures at the Capitol.
The release of this comprehensive footage not only fulfills Speaker Johnson’s promise but also signifies a substantial step towards accountability, openness, and enabling the public to form their own informed opinions about the events of that pivotal day in U.S. history.
This commitment to providing unfiltered access to the footage reflects a dedication to democratic principles and the public’s right to know.
