During a rally in Iowa, former President Donald Trump encountered an unexpected challenge when a vocal protester accused him of accepting millions of dollars from foreign businesses during his presidency. The Independent reported this incident on Monday, January 15, 2024.
The disruption briefly diverted attention from Trump’s criticisms of his primary rivals, bringing to the forefront a contentious issue that had recently surfaced. Amidst the boos from the audience, a female protester’s voice cut through, accusing Trump by shouting, “You’ve taken millions!” The former president, undeterred, responded with a taunt, urging the protester to “Go home to Mommy! Your mommy’s worried.”
Attempting to downplay the disturbance, Trump later dismissed the protester as “young and immature.” However, another protester seized the moment, accusing Trump of being a “climate criminal,” leading to more heckling and booing from the crowd.
This incident highlighted recent revelations made by Trump himself, confirming that his businesses received millions in payments from foreign entities, including China, Saudi Arabia, and other governments during his presidency. According to a report from the House Oversight Committee, Trump’s businesses received a substantial $7.8 million from at least 20 different countries. The report acknowledged its limitations, covering only two years of Trump’s presidency, hinting that the actual figures could be higher.
In a Fox News town hall, Trump admitted to the accuracy of the findings but downplayed the significance, stating, “It sounds like a lot of money. That’s small. I was doing services for them. People were staying in these massive hotels, these beautiful hotels. I don’t get $8 million for doing nothing.”
These revelations come at a time when Republican lawmakers are attempting to impeach President Joe Biden, baselessly accusing him of benefiting from his son Hunter’s overseas business dealings.
The timing of these events is crucial as they precede the Republican Iowa Caucus. Despite the disruption, Trump leads in the primary polls with a commanding 48 percent, according to the latest survey by NBC News, Des Moines Register, and Mediacom. Nikki Haley secures second place with 20 percent polling, while Ron DeSantis follows closely at 16 percent. The poll also suggests that in a hypothetical matchup between Trump and Biden in November, 43 percent of Haley’s supporters would shift their allegiance towards the latter.
