Recent days, social media platforms have been abuzz with a viral claim suggesting that President Joe Biden fell asleep during a pivotal presidential debate against former President Donald Trump. The claim originated from a Facebook post featuring a man seated on a gold throne, accompanied by images of Biden and Trump, with a caption alleging Biden nodded off during the live televised debate.
This assertion rapidly gained traction, garnering over 700 shares on Facebook within hours and spreading widely across Instagram. However, a rigorous fact-check conducted by USA Today on June 28, 2024, conclusively refuted the claim, categorizing it as false.
According to the fact-check, the video in the Facebook post misleadingly used old clips of Biden with his eyes closed, none of which were from the actual debate in question. Throughout the 90-minute debate, Biden remained alert and actively engaged, discussing policies, exchanging critiques on each other’s records, and addressing various issues, including concerns about his age and mental acuity, given his 81 years.

Notably, the Facebook post failed to provide any substantial evidence supporting its assertion that Biden had fallen asleep during the debate. Instead, it reused unrelated clips, such as one from 2011 showing Biden momentarily closing his eyes during a speech by President Barack Obama on deficit reduction. This clip, among others, was erroneously presented as depicting Biden during the debate.
During the debate itself, Biden was dressed in a navy suit with a light blue tie and an American flag pin on his left lapel, a stark contrast to the attire seen in the recycled video clips. Despite widespread dissemination of the misleading content, the video aired during the CNN broadcast clearly shows Biden fully awake and engaged throughout the event.
This incident underscores a broader pattern of misinformation targeting Biden’s mental fitness on social media, including unfounded claims that he agreed to resign if he failed a cognitive test or was deemed unfit to stand trial, all of which have been debunked by reputable sources like USA Today.
In conclusion, while political debates often spark intense scrutiny and debate, it is crucial to distinguish between factual reporting and misleading narratives propagated online.
