Charges Against Father and Son

The grand jury in Barrow County indicted 14-year-old Colt Gray on 55 counts, including four counts of malice murder and four counts of felony murder. His father, Colin Gray, faces 29 charges, including second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, and reckless conduct. Both were indicted separately and are scheduled for arraignment on November 21, where they will formally enter their pleas.

The Tragic Incident at Apalachee High School

The shooting occurred last month when Colt Gray allegedly carried a semiautomatic assault-style rifle onto the school bus, concealed in a book bag wrapped with poster board. Authorities say he exited his second-period class, emerging from a bathroom before opening fire on teachers and students in a classroom and hallway.

The shooting claimed the lives of teachers Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Cristina Irimie, 53, along with students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14. Several others were injured, with eight wounded in the attack, seven of whom were shot.

Investigators Reveal Chilling Details

During a preliminary hearing, investigators testified that Colt had meticulously planned the shooting, leaving behind a notebook outlining his deadly intentions. The notebook contained step-by-step instructions and a diagram of his classroom. In his writings, Colt estimated he could kill up to 26 people and wound 13 more, admitting he’d be “surprised if I make it this far.”

Colt’s troubled history had been noted, with several red flags emerging in the months leading up to the attack. In May 2023, both Colt and his father had been interviewed in connection to an online threat made by Colt, which he denied. After beginning his freshman year at Apalachee High School, Colt exhibited erratic behavior, including skipping multiple days of school and experiencing severe anxiety attacks.

Father’s Role Under Scrutiny

Investigators have pointed to Colin Gray’s actions as contributing to the tragedy. Despite his ex-wife, Marcee Gray, urging him to secure his firearms and limit Colt’s access, Colin reportedly bought ammunition and shooting accessories for his son. A mental health intervention was planned for Colt in August, but it fell through due to family disputes and financial issues.

District Attorney Brad Smith emphasized Colin’s culpability in the shooting, noting that the father was fully aware of Colt’s mental health struggles and obsession with school shooters. Prosecutors are increasingly holding parents accountable for their children’s actions, as evidenced by the case of Jennifer and James Crumbley in Michigan, who were convicted for their role in their son’s 2021 school shooting.

As the legal process unfolds, both father and son remain in custody—Colin Gray in Barrow County Jail and Colt in a juvenile detention center. Neither has sought release on bail, and their attorneys have so far declined to comment.
