Vice President Kamala Harris is facing escalating threats ahead of the Democratic National Convention (DNC), set to be held in Chicago from August 19-22, 2024. Frank Figliuzzi, a former FBI counterintelligence expert, has raised serious concerns about the security risks associated with Harris, particularly given her mixed-race background.
Harris, who is poised to officially accept the Democratic Party’s nomination for president, has made history as the first woman of color nominated for vice president by a major political party. Her heritage, including both Black and Indian ancestry, has made her a significant target for racially and ethnically motivated extremists.
According to a Newsweek report on August 11, 2024, Figliuzzi highlighted that Harris’ background intensifies the security threats she faces. Recent weeks have seen a troubling rise in online threats directed at Harris. One notable case involves Frank Carillo, a Virginia man who was arrested for making violent threats against Harris and other officials on GETTR, a social media platform. Court records indicate that Carillo expressed a desire to set Harris on fire, a disturbing act of racial hatred.
Figliuzzi pointed out the challenges law enforcement faces in tracking such threats. “Despite public perceptions, the FBI cannot monitor all online activity,” he explained. This limitation means many threats may go undetected until it’s too late.
In response, both the Democratic and Republican national conventions have been designated as National Special Security Events (NSSEs). This designation allows for the deployment of extensive federal resources and advanced security measures to safeguard the events. The Secret Service is leading the coordination of these efforts, ensuring a comprehensive security plan is in place.
“The full range of federal resources, including some classified techniques, will be utilized to secure the DNC,” Figliuzzi noted. This enhanced security is intended to make it even more difficult for lone actors to disrupt the event.
Despite these precautions, Harris’ role as a symbol of diversity and change continues to draw extremist threats. The rise of white supremacist movements and other radical groups has intensified the security challenge, with Harris, as a prominent figure representing progress, becoming a central target.
Figliuzzi also emphasized the broader implications of these threats for national security. “This situation reflects a deeper issue,” he said. “It’s about protecting the very fabric of our society when individuals are targeted because of their race, ethnicity, or gender.”
As the DNC approaches, law enforcement will be vigilant for any signs of potential threats. The aim is to ensure a secure environment for Harris and other attendees, allowing them to focus on the political process. However, Figliuzzi acknowledged that completely eliminating risks is nearly impossible. The goal is to minimize vulnerabilities and be prepared to respond swiftly to any incidents.
As the 2024 campaign season heats up, the security challenges facing Harris and other candidates will continue to evolve. Balancing security with openness will be crucial in the run-up to the election, with Figliuzzi’s warnings underscoring the heightened stakes involved.
