First Lady Jill Biden has come under scrutiny for her actions during and after the first presidential debate of 2024, with critics accusing her of “babysitting” President Joe Biden. This follows a performance that many have labeled as “horrific” and “terrible,” where the President stumbled over his words and appeared to lose his train of thought.

Following the debate, which took place on Thursday night, the President struggled to leave the stage. The First Lady stepped in to guide him down the stairs to meet the two CNN moderators. This moment raised further questions about President Biden’s age and mental fitness, concerns that have been a recurring theme throughout his presidency.

The couple then attended a “Let’s Go Joe” rally in Atlanta, where Jill Biden’s actions again drew criticism. Holding a microphone and addressing her husband directly, she congratulated him on his performance, saying, “Joe, you did such a great job answering every question. You knew all the facts.” This prompted cheers and chants from the crowd, who criticized former President Donald Trump for allegedly spreading lies during the debate.

However, viewers and some Democrats found the moment uncomfortable. One Democrat likened the exchange to a mother offering extra ice cream to a child, while another said it felt like a mom congratulating a toddler for using the potty for the first time.

These incidents have intensified calls for President Biden to step down as the Democratic candidate for the upcoming election. John King, CNN’s chief national correspondent, described a sense of “deep, wide, and very aggressive panic” within the Democratic Party. MSNBC contributor and Democratic strategist Max Burns expressed similar concerns on social media, suggesting that pretending Biden’s performance advanced his campaign would be political malpractice.

Former senior advisor to President Barack Obama, David Axelrod, acknowledged the damaging impact of Biden’s debate performance. He noted a sense of shock at how Biden appeared disoriented and suggested that there would likely be discussions within the party about his continuation in the race.

MSNBC’s Nicole Wallace added that the conversation about potentially replacing Biden is “live and active at the highest levels of the Democratic Party,” indicating the seriousness of the situation.

As the debate fallout continues, the Democratic Party faces significant challenges in rallying around their candidate. The President’s performance has prompted urgent discussions about the future direction of his campaign and the party’s prospects in the upcoming election.
