French Prime Minister François Bayrou condemned U.S. President Donald Trump’s treatment of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, calling it an act of “brutality” aimed at forcing Ukraine into submission.
Speaking before France’s parliament on Monday, Bayrou abandoned the usual diplomatic restraint in French-U.S. relations, delivering an unfiltered critique of the Oval Office clash that unfolded on Friday. The dramatic confrontation saw Trump reportedly pressure Zelenskyy to negotiate with Russian President Vladimir Putin or risk losing U.S. support.
“A Staggering Scene of Brutality”
Describing the incident as “staggering” in its intensity, Bayrou did not mince words:
“On Friday night, in the Oval Office of the White House, a staggering scene unfurled before the lenses of the entire world—marked by brutality, a desire to humiliate, with the goal of making Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy fold through threats so that he gives in to the demands of his aggressors.”
Bayrou went on to reference Trump’s now-infamous words: “You’re either going to make a deal or we’re out.” He argued that the message delivered to Zelenskyy was not just an insult to Ukraine but a blow to democratic values worldwide.
In a moment of solidarity, French lawmakers rose to their feet in applause for Zelenskyy’s resilience, with Bayrou stating, “For the honor of democratic responsibility, for the honor of Ukraine, and, I dare say, for the honor of Europe, President Zelenskyy did not fold.”
Europe on the Brink: Bayrou’s Stark Warning
Opening the debate on Ukraine, Bayrou painted a grim picture of Europe’s security, calling the current geopolitical crisis the most dangerous since World War II. He warned that the Oval Office confrontation had left “two victims.”
“The first is Ukraine’s security,” he said. “The second is the credibility of the trans-Atlantic alliance and America’s own historical role as a defender of democracy.”
According to Bayrou, Trump’s actions have not only jeopardized Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression but have also shaken the trust of America’s allies. He accused Trump of undermining the United States’ own legacy of protecting the vulnerable from tyranny.
While Bayrou does not officially speak for French President Emmanuel Macron, his words carried significant weight, reflecting the growing concern among European leaders about the direction of U.S. foreign policy.
