Philonise Floyd, the brother of George Floyd, has publicly endorsed the Democratic ticket of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. Floyd’s endorsement highlights his appreciation for Walz’s role in seeking justice for his brother and other victims of police violence.
In a recent statement, Philonise Floyd praised Governor Tim Walz, who has been selected as Kamala Harris’ vice presidential running mate. Floyd lauded Walz for his commitment to justice, noting that his support extended beyond mere political gestures.
“For him to take time out of his day to speak at the funeral of Daunte Wright, I gotta give him kudos,” Floyd said. Wright, a 20-year-old Black man, was fatally shot by Minnesota police in 2021. Floyd described Walz as a compassionate leader who has shown true unity and concern for the community.
Philonise Floyd emphasized Walz’s significant actions during a critical time. Initially seen as just another politician, Walz proved his dedication to justice by appointing Keith Ellison as the special prosecutor in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former police officer convicted of murdering George Floyd in 2020.
Walz’s decision to bring in Ellison, the Minnesota Attorney General, for the Chauvin case marked a pivotal moment in the pursuit of accountability. Chauvin was convicted on multiple charges, including murder and manslaughter, and received a 43.5-year sentence for his crimes and civil rights violations.
“If it wasn’t for Gov. Walz, we would not be able to walk around and say that we got some accountability,” Philonise Floyd remarked.
The Harris-Walz ticket has generated enthusiasm among Democrats, though it has faced criticism from some Republicans. Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, has labeled Walz as a “radical left man,” despite previously acknowledging his leadership during the civil unrest following George Floyd’s death.
Philonise Floyd’s endorsement underscores his belief in Walz’s readiness and capability to address the challenges ahead. “I really just want to shake his hand right now,” Floyd said. “Sometimes, it’s the people that you don’t see every day, those are the people that have the best advice. He’s ready.”
The Harris-Walz ticket aims to build on the momentum for justice and unity, resonating with voters who are keen on seeing continued progress and accountability in the wake of national tragedies.
