GOP commentator Ryan Girdusky has received a permanent ban from CNN due to his offensive remarks aimed at Muslim journalist Mehdi Hasan. The incident unfolded during a heated debate, highlighting the ongoing issue of hate speech in media.
During the exchange, Girdusky made a chilling comment: “I hope your beeper doesn’t go off.” This remark referred to recent tragic events in Lebanon, where pager bombs detonated, leading to numerous casualties. Hasan was addressing the rising tide of hate when he challenged Girdusky, stating, “If you don’t want to be called ‘Nazis,’ stop…” This prompted Girdusky’s inappropriate response, which Hasan interpreted as a threat to his life. Hasan confronted Girdusky, asking, “Did you just say I should die? Did you just say I should be killed live on CNN?”
Host Abby Phillip attempted to manage the escalating tension, as Hasan pressed Girdusky, asking, “Are you a racist, violent person inciting violence against me?”
The exchange drew swift condemnation, with Phillip emphasizing, “Ryan, that is completely out of pocket. You know that.” In response, Girdusky offered a weak apology, stating, “Then, I apologize.” However, his lackluster apology did little to diffuse the situation. Phillip continued, “Don’t say ‘then I apologize.’ You literally accused him—” only to be interrupted by another heated exchange.
Following the incident, Phillip took to X (formerly Twitter) to express her concern. She apologized to Hasan and hoped to invite him back on the show in the future. CNN also issued a strong statement, affirming that the network “will not allow guests to be demeaned” and confirming that Girdusky “will not be welcomed back.”
