President Biden’s recent threat to cut offensive aid to Israel during its conflict with Hamas has drawn sharp criticism from Republican senators. According to a report by Fox News published on Friday, May 10, 2024, these senators view Biden’s move as a political strategy aimed at appeasing the “pro-Hamas wing of the Democrat Party” ahead of the November election.
In a recent interview with CNN, Biden stated, “If they go into Rafah, I’m not supplying the weapons that have been used historically to deal with Rafah, to deal with the cities — that deal with that problem.”
Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., expressed his concern, stating, “the pro-Hamas wing of the Democrat Party is growing. And these are political decisions, trying to meddle in another country’s elections.”
Similarly, Sen. Ted Budd, R-N.C., connected Biden’s warning to Israel to his upcoming reelection bid, saying, “This is all about November, Joe Biden. This is about Minnesota. This is about Michigan. He’s collapsing in these swing states.”
The senators believe that Biden’s decision to threaten cutting aid to Israel was influenced by recent anti-Israel sentiments on college campuses and view it as a political maneuver rather than a commitment to U.S.-Israel relations.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has responded by vowing that his country will stand alone to defeat Hamas if necessary.
Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., criticized Biden’s actions as “schizophrenic national security policies” that lack coherence.
Republican lawmakers urge the public to scrutinize Biden’s actions, expressing concerns about their impact on national security and U.S. credibility globally. They believe that Biden’s willingness to appease radical elements within his party undermines America’s alliances and credibility on the world stage.
As tensions in the Middle East persist and U.S.-Israel relations remain strained, Republican lawmakers call for a reevaluation of Biden’s foreign policy decisions.
