Hicks, a senior White House adviser, testified on Friday, providing critical insights into Trump’s actions leading up to the 2016 presidential election. This trial is historic as Trump became the first former president in U.S. history to stand trial in a criminal case.

The charges relate to an investigation by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office, indicting Trump in March 2023 on charges of falsifying business records concerning hush money payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels. Trump denies the affair allegations and has pleaded not guilty, claiming political motives behind the charges.

Hicks’ testimony, detailed by Norman Eisen in a CNN opinion column, shed light on Trump’s handling of the Access Hollywood tape and its impact on his campaign. She described the tape’s devastating effect on Trump’s election chances, paving the way for subsequent hush money payments to Daniels.

Towards the end of Hicks’ testimony, she disclosed Trump’s knowledge of his lawyer Michael Cohen’s payment to Daniels. Hicks testified that Trump was aware of Cohen’s actions, attempted to shift blame onto him, and expressed relief that the scandal emerged after the election.

Eisen characterized this revelation as a “stunning trifecta,” indicating Trump’s direct involvement in the cover-up and his prioritization of political interests over transparency.

Former New York state prosecutor and legal analyst Joey Jackson emphasized Hicks’ testimony’s significance in bolstering the prosecution’s case. Jackson noted that Hicks’ portrayal of Trump as a hands-on boss explains the campaign’s awareness of potential scandals and their efforts to conceal them, strengthening the argument of Trump’s team’s complicity in orchestrating hush money payments.

Hicks’ emotional response during her testimony, including moments of distress and tears, highlighted the gravity of her disclosures and the internal conflict of implicating her former boss. Eisen noted her discomfort, indicating the weight of her testimony and its potential impact on the trial’s outcome.
