House Speaker Mike Johnson was caught on camera lying to protect former President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.
On Thursday, June 13, Mediate reported that Speaker Johnson denied Trump had disparaged Milwaukee, despite Trump admitting to it earlier. The controversy started when journalist Jake Sherman of Punchbowl News revealed that Trump called Milwaukee “a horrible city” during a private meeting with Republicans.
The situation escalated when Trump addressed the issue in an interview with Fox News’ Aishah Hasnie. Trump acknowledged mentioning Milwaukee, attempting to clarify his statement: “I think it was very clear what I meant. I said we were ‘very concerned with crime.’ I love Milwaukee, I have great friends in Milwaukee, but as you know, the crime numbers are terrible. We have to be very careful. But I was referring to also the election, the ballots, the way it went down, it was very bad in Milwaukee.”
Trump’s comments directly contradicted Speaker Johnson’s assertion. During an appearance on Fox News’s Hannity, host Sean Hannity asked Johnson if Trump “took a shot at Milwaukee.” Johnson confidently replied, “No, I didn’t hear it, and I was sitting right next to him.” However, footage from the meeting clearly showed Trump making the derogatory comment about Milwaukee, with Johnson seated nearby.
The backlash was swift. Social media exploded with criticism, accusing Johnson of lying to protect Trump. Some questioned Johnson’s integrity and even his faith. One Twitter user stated, “Mike Johnson is not just a liar, he’s a bad Christian.”
Another critic remarked, “This is classic MAGA. Mike Johnson is made to publicly lie about something that Trump himself admits. Shows that Johnson is powerless.”
“Mike Johnson, were you so excited for your gold star from Trump that you missed the comment altogether? You lied to cover for him, and he just outed you,” another critic commented.
“Christian Evangelical Speaker Johnson has issues with telling the truth,” an X user observed.
This incident highlights the importance of accurate reporting and accountability in politics. Johnson’s lie underscores the media’s crucial role in ensuring the public receives truthful information. Integrity in the political process is essential, and the media’s role in maintaining it cannot be overstated.
