Renowned actor Ian McKellen recently opened up about the harrowing experience of falling offstage during his performance in “Player Kings” at the Noel Coward Theatre in London. The incident, which occurred on June 17, left the 85-year-old star grappling with severe physical pain and emotional distress.

McKellen, best known for his iconic roles in “The Lord of the Rings” and “X-Men” franchises, was in the middle of a battle scene portraying John Falstaff when he unexpectedly took a tumble. The fall resulted in multiple injuries, including a chipped vertebrae and a fractured wrist.

In a candid interview with Saga magazine, McKellen shared how the fall has profoundly impacted his daily life. “I avoid going out because I’m nervous someone might bump into me,” he revealed, adding that he continues to endure “agonizing pain” in his shoulders due to the jolt his body experienced during the fall.

Despite the severity of his injuries, McKellen considers himself fortunate, crediting the fat suit he wore as Falstaff for preventing even more serious damage. “The fat suit I wore for Falstaff saved my ribs and other joints, so I consider myself lucky,” he explained.

The emotional toll of the accident has also weighed heavily on the veteran actor. “I’ve relived that fall countless times. It was horrible,” he confessed. “I thought it was the end of something. It was very upsetting. The end didn’t mean my death, but it felt like the end of my participation in the play.”

Following the incident, McKellen was unable to perform in the show’s final three performances, held from June 20-22, and was temporarily replaced by actor Devid Semark in the role of Falstaff. The production, directed by Robert Icke, is a unique blend of Shakespeare’s plays, “Henry IV” Parts 1 and 2, and had been running for 12 weeks since April.

In a statement released after the fall, the theatre assured fans that McKellen was on the mend. “Following a scan, the brilliant NHS team have assured us that he will make a speedy and full recovery and Ian is in good spirits,” a representative of the theatre said, according to Variety.

McKellen’s fans, many of whom were deeply concerned about his well-being, took to social media to express their support. One user wrote, “Oh my goodness, Sir Ian McKellen fell off the stage while doing ‘Player Kings.’ That’s so scary. I’m wishing him a speedy recovery.”

As McKellen continues to recover, he remains a beloved figure in the acting community, with many hoping to see him back on stage when he’s fully healed.
