Iceland is on a mission to expand its Food Warehouse stores, with plans to open up to 250 new locations across the UK. This ambitious expansion targets retail parks in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, seeking sites with a minimum footprint of 10,000 square feet.
A Massive Expansion Plan
Since its inception in 2014, Food Warehouse has provided customers with a larger retail space for bulk-buy items. The chain, a part of Iceland Foods, is now working with Mason Partners LLP, its long-term property advisor, to identify and secure new locations. The company has yet to release a full list of potential sites but has named Crawley, Brighton, Salisbury, and Dundee as specific targets. Additionally, suburban areas of major cities like London, Manchester, Glasgow, and Newcastle are being considered.
Upcoming Store Locations
In 2025, Iceland plans to open new Food Warehouse stores in Shrewsbury, Bicester, Selby, Yeovil, Llantrisant, and Wakefield. With over 200 existing locations, this expansion aims to significantly increase their footprint. A spokeswoman for Iceland Foods confirmed these plans to The Grocer, highlighting the company’s commitment to growing its presence across the UK.
Innovative Collaborations
This expansion comes on the heels of Iceland’s collaboration with Wilko, where freezers stocked with Iceland supermarket food products have been added to Wilko stores in St Albans and Rotherham. This partnership is part of a broader strategy to diversify offerings and enhance customer convenience. More Wilko branches are expected to start selling frozen food, as the high street retailer aims to expand its product range.
Alex Simpkin, CEO of CDS Supermarkets, which owns both The Range and Wilko, commented on the collaboration: “Our new stores in Rotherham and St Albans have a much larger food offer, including the introduction of some Iceland products. There are natural synergies between the Wilko and Iceland customer bases, so this trial feels like a great opportunity to test new and exciting formats.”
What This Means for You
With Iceland’s ambitious plans to expand its Food Warehouse stores, there’s a good chance one might open near you soon. These larger stores offer a wide range of bulk-buy items, catering to the needs of families and individuals looking for cost-effective shopping solutions.
