Is Biden Playing with Fire? The Alarming Consequences Revealed

4 Min Read

In a stern warning issued on the heels of a high-stakes meeting, President Joe Biden declared any nuclear assault on the United States or its allies by North Korea as “unacceptable” and a precursor to the “end” of Kim Jong Un’s regime. Despite the assertive stance, experts caution that Biden’s robust rhetoric may not dissuade Pyongyang from advancing its nuclear and missile programs, heightening fears that a miscalculation by either party could plunge the region into a catastrophic war.

The United States-Republic of Korea Nuclear Consultative Group convened in Washington to discuss nuclear deterrence strategies and contingency plans for potential conflict with North Korea, as reported by The New York Post on December 16, 2023.

White House officials emphasized that any attack by Pyongyang on South Korea would be met with a “swift, overwhelming, and decisive response.” President Biden echoed his earlier warning from April, asserting that any nuclear aggression would spell the demise of the offending regime. While expressing openness to diplomacy, Biden stressed that North Korea must demonstrate sincerity and a genuine willingness to denuclearize.

Despite diplomatic overtures, North Korea has shown no signs of relenting in its pursuit of nuclear and missile capabilities, deeming them crucial for survival and security. In a concerning development, North Korea simulated “scorched earth” nuclear strikes on South Korea in response to joint military drills involving US long-range B-1B bombers.

North Korea has conducted several missile tests, including intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) with nuclear warhead capabilities. Kim Tae-hyo, South Korea’s deputy national security adviser, warned of a potential ICBM test later this month, posing a direct threat to the US mainland.

In September 2022, North Korea enacted a comprehensive law cementing itself as a nuclear-armed state, asserting the irreversibility of its nuclear status. The law declared North Korea’s nuclear weapons as a “treasured sword” for defending sovereignty and dignity, pledging their use only in response to provocation by a hostile force.

Experts argue that Biden’s warnings may fall short given North Korea’s history of defiance against international sanctions. The strategy of relying on deterrence and diplomacy, they caution, might not be sufficient to prevent a crisis, as North Korea may misinterpret the resolve and red lines of the US and its allies or launch a preemptive strike if it feels cornered.

Lee Sung-yoon, a professor of Korean studies at Tufts University, stressed the need for a comprehensive approach. He urged Biden to consider options such as intensifying economic and diplomatic isolation, bolstering military capabilities and readiness, and engaging China and Russia to increase pressure on Pyongyang.

“North Korea is not inclined to relinquish its nuclear weapons easily,” warns Lee. “Biden’s warning, while sounding tough, may be perceived as an empty threat by North Korea, which has been preparing for a nuclear war for decades. If he miscalculates, he will put America and its allies in great danger.”
