Heated political clash erupted after billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk labeled Democratic Senator Mark Kelly a “traitor” over his outspoken support for Ukraine. But in a surprising turn, a Republican lawmaker is now taking a stand against Musk’s incendiary rhetoric.
The Fallout from Musk’s Accusation
Musk, who has repeatedly advocated for the U.S. to withdraw security aid to Ukraine, lashed out at Kelly after the Arizona senator shared a detailed thread on X (formerly Twitter) about his visit to the war-torn nation. Kelly reaffirmed his commitment to Ukraine and placed the blame for the ongoing conflict squarely on Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Musk’s response? A blunt accusation, branding Kelly a “traitor.”
The senator wasted no time in hitting back. “Traitor? Elon, if you don’t understand that defending freedom is a basic tenet of what makes America great and keeps us safe, maybe you should leave it to those of us who do,” Kelly shot back on X.
A Republican Pushes Back
As the backlash against Musk’s comments gained momentum, Republican Representative Don Bacon of Nebraska stepped into the fray—this time, in defense of Kelly. Speaking to CNN’s Manu Raju, Bacon condemned Musk’s remarks, calling them “not decent” and “not right.”
“I don’t agree with Senator Kelly on everything, but we don’t call each other traitors,” Bacon said, adding that Musk’s rhetoric “reflects badly on the White House.”
When pressed on why he believed Musk’s words were tied to the administration, Bacon pointed to the billionaire’s close ties with President Donald Trump and the White House’s stance on Ukraine. “Because he represents the White House when he says that,” Bacon argued. “And also, going after the foreign minister of Poland—I don’t think that’s right either.”
Bacon, who has been a vocal advocate for measured foreign policy, suggested that Musk should focus on policy discussions rather than launching personal attacks. “His job was to do an audit of what we’re spending on, I think we should have more discussion for when we fire people, cut people, know what the consequences are, but it doesn’t reflect well on our country when this goes on,” he added.
A High-Stakes International Meeting
This war of words erupted on the same day U.S. and Ukrainian officials convened in Saudi Arabia to discuss a possible ceasefire and the resumption of U.S. military aid to Kyiv. High-ranking officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, attended the meeting alongside top Ukrainian leaders.
Neither Trump nor Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky participated in the talks, but Zelensky later met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The Bigger Picture
Kelly, standing firm on his stance, doubled down on X: “Ukraine did not start this war, and they did not ask for the constant missile and drone attacks that have terrorized the population. Government officials who can’t acknowledge factual information should reevaluate their career choices.”
Meanwhile, Zelensky remained steadfast in his call for peace. “Ukraine has been seeking peace since the very first second of the war, and we have always said that the only reason it continues is Russia,” he declared in a Monday social media post.
With tensions escalating between Musk, lawmakers, and global leaders, all eyes are now on the next move in both Washington and the international arena. This is a developing story—stay tuned for more updates.
