President Joe Biden faces intense backlash from the progressive wing of his party over his new border policy, which closely resembles tactics used by former President Donald Trump. This contentious move has sparked a significant rift within the Democratic Party, with prominent figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) expressing strong disapproval.
Progressive Backlash
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez voiced her dismay, calling the policy a “profound disappointment” following a House floor vote on Thursday, June 6. Biden’s new executive order mandates turning back asylum seekers at the border whenever the seven-day average for migrant encounters exceeds 2,500. Critics argue that this measurement is flawed, often resulting in double or triple counting asylum seekers.
Ocasio-Cortez and other progressives are questioning Biden’s decision to adopt Trump-era policies. “It’s wrong. It’s not okay,” Ocasio-Cortez stated. “We need to support a natural path to citizenship and provide necessary resources.”
Legal Challenges and Broader Discontent
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) announced plans to challenge Biden’s executive order in court, similar to its previous actions against Trump’s asylum ban. “The Biden administration’s order will severely restrict people’s legal right to seek asylum, putting tens of thousands of lives at risk,” the ACLU tweeted.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, echoed these concerns, labeling the policy a mistake. Jayapal criticized the administration for succumbing to conservative pressures, noting that Republicans, under Trump’s influence, had previously abandoned a bipartisan Senate immigration reform package.
“We need to communicate our vision to the American people,” Jayapal asserted. “They want an orderly process, not the chaotic approach we’re seeing.”
Defense from Moderate Democrats
In contrast, more moderate Democrats are defending Biden’s approach. Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) highlighted that Biden had introduced comprehensive immigration reform on his first day in office, facing continuous Republican opposition. “He’s trying to address part of the issue he can control,” Garcia told Raw Story, expressing hope for further actions from the White House.
The Path Forward
As the debate intensifies, progressives remain steadfast in their opposition, aiming to steer Biden towards a more inclusive and humanitarian immigration policy. “I’m profoundly disappointed by it,” Ocasio-Cortez reiterated, reflecting the sentiments of many within the Democratic Party who are wary of adopting any Trump-like policies.
With immigration a critical issue for many voters, the clash within the Democratic Party highlights the ongoing struggle to balance security and compassion at the nation’s borders. The outcome of this internal conflict may significantly shape the future of U.S. immigration policy.
