rammy-winning rapper Nelly, whose real name is Cornell Haynes II, was arrested early Wednesday morning at Hollywood Casino in his hometown of St. Louis. The “Hot in Herre” rapper, who reportedly won a jackpot before the incident, is now facing charges of drug possession, according to online records from the Missouri Highway Patrol.

Arrest Details
The arrest occurred after an officer conducted a criminal records search on Nelly while he was gambling at the casino. During the search, the officer allegedly discovered four ecstasy pills in Nelly’s possession. Initially, Nelly was reportedly arrested due to an outstanding warrant from 2018 related to a “No Proof of Insurance” infraction, but the situation escalated when the drugs were found.

Attorney’s Statement
Nelly’s attorney, Scott Rosenblum, strongly contested the charges, stating that his client was not originally charged with drug possession. Instead, the arrest was supposedly linked to the 2018 insurance-related warrant, which Nelly had no prior knowledge of. Rosenblum claimed that the officer involved acted overzealously and without probable cause.

“Mr. Haynes was targeted by an overzealous, out-of-line officer,” Rosenblum stated. He further explained that the officer required Nelly to undergo a background check after winning a large jackpot, leading to his arrest. Rosenblum criticized the officer’s decision to handcuff Nelly and parade him through the casino, describing the search that led to the discovery of the alleged drugs as unwarranted and without justification.

Legal Outlook
Rosenblum expressed confidence that the drug possession charge would not hold up in court, citing that Nelly regularly undergoes rigorous background checks, including FBI checks, for his international travels, which had revealed no outstanding warrants. He also indicated that they would be requesting an inquiry into the conduct of the officer involved in the arrest.

Nelly’s Personal Life
In other news, Nelly’s personal life has been in the spotlight recently. The rapper married singer Ashanti in December 2023, and the couple announced earlier this year that they are expecting their first child together. The pair has had a long history, having met at the 2003 Grammy Awards, dated on and off for a decade, and eventually reconciling after a brief separation.

Nelly’s arrest has sparked controversy, with his legal team challenging the validity of the charges and the conduct of the arresting officer. As the case unfolds, it remains to be seen how these charges will impact the rapper’s career and personal life.
