In the midst of the ongoing battle for the House Speaker’s position, Rep. Ken Buck, a Republican from Colorado, has suggested a temporary speakership to break the impasse. Buck predicts that Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, currently vying for the speakership, will continue to lose support, making it necessary for Republicans to explore alternative solutions.
Speaking on “The Takeout” podcast, Buck expressed his concerns about Jordan’s diminishing support, stating, “I think he bleeds three or four votes this next time, maybe a little bit more.” According to Buck, some Republicans have resisted pressure from grassroots activists and are increasingly opposed to Jordan’s candidacy, leading to a growing need for a resolution.
Buck outlined two potential scenarios to resolve the crisis. The first involves a “power-sharing” arrangement where Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana assumes the role of speaker, while Jordan becomes majority leader. This arrangement aims to bridge the gap between the Scalise and Jordan factions within the party and could pave the way for Jordan’s future candidacy for the speakership.
The second option proposed by Buck involves appointing Rep. Patrick McHenry, a Republican from North Carolina, as the temporary speaker. Under this plan, McHenry would hold the position for a limited duration, with full authority to oversee the passage of crucial legislation, including bills supporting Israel and Ukraine, as well as spending bills to avoid a government shutdown.
Buck acknowledged the challenges in implementing either solution, especially considering the opposition from some Republicans, such as Rep. Chip Roy of Texas, who vehemently opposes empowering McHenry on a temporary basis. Additionally, the plan would require bipartisan cooperation, as House Democrats would need to join a coalition to create a temporary speakership for McHenry.
While Buck’s proposals offer potential paths forward, the current situation remains complex and fluid. As Jordan’s pursuit of the speakership continues, political calculations and negotiations will play a crucial role in determining the next steps for the Republican Party.
