Josh Gad has confirmed exciting news for fans of the cult classic “Spaceballs.” In an Instagram post on Tuesday, June 18, the actor revealed plans for a sequel to the beloved 1987 space opera parody. Co-writing the script, co-producing, and starring in the film, Gad expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “My phone has never exploded as hard as it did today.”
The sequel, still in its early stages, marks a significant reunion as Gad collaborates closely with the legendary Mel Brooks. At 97 years old, Brooks, who directed, co-wrote, produced, and appeared in the original film, is set to produce the new installment alongside Gad and other notable talents.
“We are doing everything in our power alongside Mel to make sure you get what you’ve waited 37 long years for. EVERYTHING 🚀,” Gad wrote in his Instagram post, acknowledging the dedication of the team involved, including director Josh Greenbaum and screenwriters Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez.
Greenbaum, known for his work on “Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar,” will helm the project, bringing fresh vision to the anticipated sequel. Details about the plot remain tightly under wraps, with the movie currently in development at Amazon MGM Studios.
Gad’s involvement in reviving beloved classics extends beyond “Spaceballs.” He previously teased his role in the upcoming reboot “Shrunk,” a sequel to the 1989 family adventure “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids,” where he portrays the grown son of the original protagonist.
As anticipation builds for both “Shrunk” and the “Spaceballs” sequel, Gad remains dedicated to delivering on the expectations of fans, promising an experience worthy of the franchise’s legacy.
