Kamala Harris has taken a bold stance in the 2024 presidential race by labeling Donald Trump a fascist. During a campaign stop in Detroit, the U.S. Vice President and Democratic nominee made her most definitive statement yet about her Republican rival’s authoritarian ambitions.
The declaration came in an interview with Charlamagne Tha God, a popular radio host whose program reaches millions of Black listeners monthly. When Charlamagne directly asked why Trump’s vision couldn’t be described as fascism, Harris responded decisively: “Yes, we can say that.”
This marks the first time Harris has publicly referred to Trump as a fascist, despite his escalating rhetoric and threats toward political opponents. The accusation touches on growing concerns about Trump’s potential return to the White House and the authoritarian tendencies his critics fear he may bring.
A Campaign Turning Point
Harris’s endorsement of the term “fascist” signals a critical moment in the 2024 campaign, especially in Michigan, a key battleground state. With less than a month before Election Day, she stressed the stark contrast between her vision for the nation and that of Trump, warning voters of the dangerous path they could take if they choose the latter.
Charlamagne pressed Harris on this issue, highlighting the severity of the choice Americans face: “The other is about fascism. Why can’t we just say it?”
Harris agreed without hesitation, pushing the political discourse into uncharted territory for a sitting vice president. Her remarks echo growing concerns from political commentators and even former military officials about Trump’s governance style. Gen. Mark Milley, former chairman of the U.S. joint chiefs of staff, reportedly referred to Trump as “a fascist to the core” in a newly released book by journalist Bob Woodward.
Trump’s Response and Past Rhetoric
Unsurprisingly, Trump’s campaign responded sharply, accusing Harris of inciting violence. “This is the type of disgusting rhetoric that led to two assassination attempts against President Trump,” his campaign posted on X (formerly Twitter). However, Trump himself has repeatedly branded Harris as a fascist, communist, and Marxist during his own rallies. In August, he referred to her as “Comrade Kamala,” attempting to link her to communism in a derogatory manner.
Trump’s rhetoric has become more extreme, with accusations against Democratic opponents reaching new heights. He has also pushed dangerous ideas, like advocating military action against those he claims are sowing “chaos” on Election Day, despite lacking the authority to do so.
Fascism Claims: A Growing Concern
The debate over whether Trump exhibits fascist traits has been ongoing since his first presidency. Former White House Chief of Staff John Kelly once shared in an interview that Trump had praised Hitler, saying, “Hitler did some good things.” Kelly quickly rebuked Trump, warning him never to speak positively about the Nazi leader.
This conversation, along with Harris’s latest comments, adds fuel to the ongoing debate about Trump’s political style and its implications for the future of American democracy. As Election Day approaches, the stakes are high, with Harris drawing a clear line for voters about the risks she believes Trump’s leadership poses.
With a divided electorate, Harris’s blunt assessment could either rally Democrats or provoke further backlash from Trump’s base, but one thing is clear: the 2024 election is shaping up to be one of the most critical in modern U.S. history.
